OFTEN IN THIS SPACE, I express my admiration for our authors, a group of skilled audio professionals dedicated to sharing their knowledge and expertise. There’s also another upside in working with this group, and that’s having the opportunity to follow up on some of the topics they cover in further detail. Case in point is Mike Sokol, who in this issue delivers the latest chapter in his ongoing look at creating a semi-silent stage. After I read through Mike’s article, we got together on the phone and must have talked for at least 45 minutes about the approach of placing loudspeakers behind open microphones, enthusiastically exchanging thoughts, ideas and experiences on the subject culled over a good many years. It’s the type of thing that makes one very glad to be working in this business. Speaking of conversations, I also had a great time talking with some of the key members of the sound team currently out with the Bruno Mars world tour. The result of those discussions are encapsulated in our coverage in this issue, and I hope the passion and professionalism of Chris “Sully” Sullivan, Chris Rabold and Ramon Morales comes through clearly. Elsewhere, Erik Matlock dials up details of the sonic methodology with this year’s Warped Tour, which he caught up with on a recent steamy stop in Orlando. Also a big thanks to his wife Geri for the excellent photos that accompany his report. In addition, Craig Leerman provides an interesting take on analog consoles, while Jonah Altrove offers insights on optimizing monitor rigs in festival situations. And as always, there’s much more. Enjoy the issue.
